Sandy Ground Drains Fast and Compacts Badly
Closer to the beach, soils run sandy. Sandy ground drains quickly, which helps, but it does not compact into a stable base on its own, and wind and salt air are part of the picture on exposed properties.
Inland parts of town shift toward heavier soils that hold moisture through winter freeze and thaw. Either way the answer is the same: excavate to depth, compact in lifts, and give the water somewhere to go.
Which is why two walks on the same street can behave completely differently. It comes down to what went in underneath.
What Freeze and Thaw Does to a Walkway
Fall rain lands weeks before the ground freezes, so whatever is in the ground is locked in from there. Then the melt arrives in surges, into ground that is still frozen underneath.
Water expands when it freezes, and under a walk it lifts. The first winter usually looks fine. Later it shows up as a high edge at the door, a paver that rocks underfoot, a step that no longer sits level, and joints that open up and take on weeds.
Built for Ground That Shifts
On sandy ground the temptation is to skip depth, because the digging is easy and the water drains. That is exactly the walk that goes uneven after two winters.

Does salt air affect a walkway?
It is part of the picture on exposed properties, along with wind. It does not change how a walk is built so much as what it has to put up with, which is why the base work and the edge restraint matter.
We use the yard all summer. When should the work happen?
Spring and fall both work, and fall is often easier to schedule. A walk or steps installed in fall are ready the day summer starts, instead of being built while you are trying to use the yard.
Can you match a walk to an existing patio or fire pit area?
Yes. Much of our Hampton work centers on outdoor living, so the walk usually has to tie into a patio, a seating wall, or a fire pit area that is already there. We plan the connection points before anything is set.
