It Is the Thaw Cycles, Not the Deep Freeze
One long hard freeze is not what ruins a patio or wall in New Hampshire. The real wear comes from repetition. Late winter and early spring bring stretches where wet ground thaws by afternoon and refreezes overnight, and each of those cycles shifts saturated soil a little. Hardscape sitting on a shallow or poorly drained base gets nudged out of position dozens of times before the ground finally firms up, which is how surfaces develop dips, joints open, and wall blocks start to lean.
Our defense is to keep water out of the structure in the first place. We excavate down to ground that can carry the load, rebuild with gravel compacted in lifts, pitch every surface so meltwater runs off the hardscape and away from the house, and give retaining walls a drainage path so nothing collects behind them.
