Hardscape Construction for Portsmouth Homes

Up North Scapes builds patios, walkways, and retaining walls for Portsmouth homeowners from our base in Newmarket, a short drive inland from the city. Portsmouth is one of the core towns in our Seacoast service area, and every project there gets the same standard we apply everywhere: full excavation, a compacted gravel base, and drainage planned before the first paver is set.

Portsmouth properties often pair older homes with compact lots, which puts a premium on careful layout. A new walkway has to meet an existing entry cleanly, a patio has to shed water without sending it toward the foundation, and a wall has to hold grade in a space where every foot counts. We work through those constraints at the design stage rather than discovering them mid build.

Why Base Work Matters

Built for Coastal Conditions

Near the coast, soils tend to be sandy and water moves through them quickly, but winter freeze and thaw cycles are just as hard on hardscape here as they are inland. When trapped water freezes under a patio or behind a wall, it expands and pushes the structure out of position. That is frost heave, and it is the main reason poorly built hardscape fails within a few seasons.

Our answer is the base system: excavation to the depth the site requires, gravel compacted in lifts, surfaces pitched away from the house, and drainage that gives water somewhere to go. You can read more about our approach on our hardscaping page and our excavation and drainage page, or see the full list of towns we cover on our service areas page.
